Complete Poems Section 10

At Tan Zhou

jīn gǔ  wú duān rù wàng zhōng。

chǔ gē  chóng dié yuàn lán cóng。

gǔ fù  chéng chén pò miào fēng。

sōng láo yī zuì yǔ shuí tóng;tòng。

At dusk, Tan Zhou’s offices lie empty

No matter who peers within, as it has always been

Dark, Light, the tears on mottled bamboo multiplies

Towards the lotus,  again and again, The Chu Balladeer directs his sighs

Under Tao Gong’s warships, rain fell on bare sand

Under Scholar Jia’s dusty ceiling, the wind toppled his shrine

No friends around, my views of home obscured

Who will join me as I drown in poplar wine?

The Splendid Palace

yóu kǒng  é méi  bù shèng rén。

zhī;zhǐ jiào;jiāo  tiān zǐ zàn  méng chén。

In the Splendid Palace, although His Grace has always been without peer,

He seemed at a loss when he saw the moth shaped eyebrows he so feared

Rather, mocked by Lady Baos laughs, and hurt,

It was his son who, for a time, was covered with dirt. [1]

The Splendid Palace

shǒu àn zhāo yáng  dì yī rén。

kě néng  tiān xià yǒu hú chén。
Across the Splendid Palace Pavilion are all manner of rainbow skirts

For the Lady of the Zhaoyang Temple the clapping starts

When the dancing that day fails to engage,

Perhaps it’s because the Emperor of Heaven has battles to wage?

Evening Repose

qián chí sī àn rán 。

liǔ zì bù shèng yān 。

cháng wēi gāo xià xián 。

dé shī zài dāng nián 。
Behind the side doors the court sleeps

In front of the steps, dark thoughts lurk

The plum trees shouldn’t add more snow

The willow barely rises above the mist

A rope of tears thick and thin

A broken heart wound as tight as the strings of the qin

A beautiful soul has no place to stay

Loss is sure to come these days!

To Hermit Zhengdang

fú yún  yī piān shì wú shēn。

nuǎn rù tīng zhōu zhú diào lún;qiāng。

shǔ jiāng gòng;gōng zhǔ lù jī chún。

tā rì  piān zhōu yǒu  gù rén。
One’s hair grows white with roaming

The body has become a floating cloud

When cold, return to the mountains and play chess

Warm, turn my fishing wheel in the sandy islet

Southern Cassia herbs boil, like Scholar Zhang’s soup

The Shu ginger cooks, like in Lu Ji’s herring dish

Our encounter is warm and easily flows

Whatever day I find myself in a skiff I will think of you

Dream Lake

chǔ wáng zàng jìn;jǐn mǎn chéng jiāo。

xū jiǎn gōng chú wèi;wéi xì yāo。

Under the crying wind, the white reeds of Dream Lake rustle

A city of beauties hiding the King of Chu’s tomb

Countless numbers would dance and sing

How much food for these slender waists did empty kitchens bring?[2]

Remembering Hanging Out With Yan Wuguang, While On The River

mèng bǐ shēn zàng;cáng  wǔ sè háo。

zhèn;chēn xī liú yǔ xiè gōng cáo。

A long blade curves before the Southern Expedition’s tents

Deep In my dreams my five colored brush lies hidden

From the clear waters I fear to sing

The West keeps getting pacified and Xie attacks Cao

Casual Thoughts

cóng;zòng;cōng zhī jìng yuǎn yóu。

xiū huàn jiē míng sōu。

yún qí;jī bù xià lóu。

zì shì yǒu  xiāng chóu

This lowly cadre is often ill

Who knew I would suddenly be sent far

My courteous company is not worthy of a guest’s politeness

Relaxing, I seek to pull words from a moody place

I move my couch often to see the good trees

The clouds and peaks are not beneath the towers

How can I shut out those other thoughts

Of home that give me so much worry?

Official Li Wei

luán jìng  jiā rén jiù huì;kuài xī。

mù mián huā nuǎn  zhè gū fēi。

His crimsoned disciples haven’t heard a word

The women of the phoenix mirrors for a long time have rarely been seen

Today at Lingnan’s song and dance parlors she must stay

The silk cotton tree blooms, the partridge flies away

Song and Dance

huí xuě wǔ yāo qīng。

jūn qīng guó zì qīng。

The clouds pause at the sound of her crystal voice

Snow falls when her lithe waist dances

All she seeks is the kings wandering gaze

So sick with longing that even the state may fall!

Inner Palace

yù hú zhuàn;chuán diǎn yàn;yè;yān tóng lóng。

qīng lù;lòu piān zhī guì yè nóng。

jǐng yáng gōng lǐ  jí shí zhōng。

zhǐ yǒu gāo táng  shí èr fēng。

A sealed damask cage, in golden halls where incense burns,

A copper dragon spout, where the Jade water clock churns

The. hurricane does not pity clothes of thin gauze

The rich scent of Cassia leaves makes even fresh dew pause

Mottled bamboos by the mountain peak shower endless tears

On time, the sound of the Jingyang Tower clock reaches one’s ears

Is it true the rain and clouds I seek

Are only found on the High Tang’s twelfth most peak?

On Happily Receiving A Letter From Classmate Zhan in Guizhou

guī rì dòng xiān cáo。

This evening rainwater gathers Pitter patter pours

Pent up worries and thoughts of you come to the fore

I know no one within ten thousand Li

The Swallow sometimes flies twice as high, you see

Bandit hordes press down on Sanfu

Slippery vines and moss on One Hundred Corral Pass

The divine court favors your Wei Suo brush[3]

Heading back, this lowly Xian Cao is moved

A cloudy mist forms over the celestials footsteps

Spreading shades of dusk obstruct the traveler’s path

From the Green Void, when will she return to me[4]

On this road leading to the Capital City?

I wait for the Blue Bird to bring me news[5]

Spurning a welcome by the Purple Maiden[6]

Frustrating were the dreams of Chu[7]

The story of the Han Palace sorceress was heartbreaking too! [8]

Her attendants rode cold bamboo canes

White elms sheltered her chariot

When the Spinning Maid leaves

Will the Lady of the Moon return?

Alone, the goose has lost his way through the ravines

The abandoned phoenix, on the green Wu tree blames her folly

It was only under the jade peach trees

That husband Fang Shuo turned crazy!

The Goddess’ Temple                                                                        《

lóng hù yáo chuāng fèng yǎn fēi。

bù hán cháng;zhǎng zhù;zhuó;zhāo wǔ zhū yì;yī。

tiān shàng yīng;yìng wú liú wǔ wēi。

měi cháo;zhāo zhū guǎn  jǐ shí guī

Among pines and bamboo

A sweet scent of orchids fills the temple’s curtains and spaces

Dragons shelter jasper windows

Phoenix faces cover the door knobs

Your body, immaterial, is easily lost in mist that lies three li deep

Don’t be cold, in your long, ephemeral Five Pearl dress[9]

We mortals present the handsome Cui Luoshi

Heaven has no need for one such as Liu Weiwei[10]

I inquire of the hairpin with two white sparrows

Each morning, when she returns from the Jade Palace – please let me know!

Song of Chu

lóu qián gōng pàn mù jiāng liú。

sòng yù wú chóu yì zì chóu。

Above the mountain, the Expedition Palace, above the Palace, the tower

Before the tower, the Palace promenade,

Next to which the Mu Jiang flows

Even from the clear sky, sunset brings a drizzling rain

As in Song Yu’s song, autumn reveals ambition, ambition, pain!

Remembering the Monk

dì chéng zhōng xiǎo yì xī fēng。

tóng zǐ  kāi mén xuě mǎn sōng

For years, my farewell to Monk Yuan seemed a small thing

In the Capitol, one remembers West Peak when the morning bells ring

The oven smokes, fiercely burns, the cold lamp fails to glow

A child opens the door to see pines covered in snow
